About The Department
The English department of California State University, Sacramento, is a community of teachers, scholars, writers, and support staff whose primary mission is to promote learning in composition, creative writing, English education, linguistics, literature, and the teaching of English as a second language.
Academic Programs
Undergraduate Programs
We offer two Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees: a B.A. in English and a B.A. in English-Precredential (Single Subject with Pre-Credential Preparation degree). We offer three Minor programs Creative Writing, English, and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages); we also offer a TESOL certificate for undergraduates.
Graduate Programs
We offer three M.A. programs: (1) the English M.A. (with concentrations in Creative Writing and Literature), (2) the MA in Composition Rhetoric, and Professional Writing, (3) and the TESOL M.A. The English M.A. is designed for students who wish to develop further their understanding of literature or their creative writing talent; graduates may want to teach at community colleges, pursue a career writing, and/or continue for further post-graduate study at the Ph. D. or MFA level. The M.A. in Composition, Rhetoric, and Professional Writing offers preparation for careers in fields such as education, journalism, publishing, law, technical writing, advertising, arts administration, or civil service; or to pursue study at the doctoral level. The TESOL program is recommended for candidates wishing to teach ESL in community college programs or in university programs in the US or overseas. In addition, we offer certificates for M.A. students in TESOL and Teaching Composition.
