About English
About The Department
The Department of English at Sacramento State is a distinguished community of educators, scholars, writers, and professional staff dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in literature, writing, linguistics, media, and cultural studies.
Designed to maintain academic rigor while allowing students to explore their interests, our curriculum blends traditional methods in language, literature, and writing studies with innovative approaches to media, technology, and creative expression. We offer two Bachelor of Arts degrees (English and English-Pre-credential) along with minors in English, Creative Writing, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Students may also pursue certificates in TESOL, Professional Writing, Teaching Composition, and Writing for Film, Stage, and Television.
Through interdisciplinary collaboration, service-learning initiatives, and a commitment to inclusive education, the department prepares students for diverse career paths both within and beyond academia. As students engage in analytical study of texts, language, and culture, they develop critical thinking, cultural literacy, and imaginative insight--essential skills for contributing meaningfully to diverse communities.
