Peter H. Shattuck Green & Gold Classroom

Peter H. Shattuck

Peter ShattuckPeter H. Shattuck taught early American history at California State University, Sacramento from 1965 to 1998. In addition to being an outstanding teacher, the distinguished professor was also a proud “Hornet” and an active citizen of the University. Between 1980-88, he served on the Academic Senate of the California State University system, as well as the Sacrament State Faculty Senate. From 1972-1973, he served as Chair of the CSU Senate and again from 1985-87. He was also elected History Department Chair, served as campus Ombudsman, co-authored the University’s first AIDS policy, worked for four semesters in the Academic Advising Center, and served on the board of the Sacramento History Museum. After leaving the classroom, he continued to serve the Sac State community, spending many years on the board of the Sacramento State Friends of the Library, some of them as President, and was Vice President of the Sacramento State Retirees Association from 2001 through 2010. In 2015, Peter H. Shattuck passed away. An Endowment was established in his name by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Johnson Horr Shattuck, to honor his devotion to teaching, his love of early American history, and his stanch belief in the importance of history.

The Green and Gold Room

The Green and Gold RoomNamed for Peter H. Shattuck, Professor Emeritus, the Green and Gold room is a place where both history students and faculty engage in a variety of activities. Besides serving as a home for the Department of History’s seminar classes, the department’s faculty meetings, and retreats, the room is a space for faculty research talks, faculty-student lecture series guests, the History Club, Phi Alpha Theta, and meetings of the editorial faculty-student staff of the Clio journal, the award-winning publication of the History Honor Society.

The Peter H. Shattuck Green and Gold classroom is the designated space on the campus of Sac State for teaching history, engaging students in rigorous learning, and encouraging excellence, research and scholarship. The product of a partnership between the College of Arts and Letters, the Department of History, and the Shattuck family, the Peter H. Shattuck Green and Gold Room is an intellectual hug for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in History, the Master of Arts (MA) in History, or the Master of Arts (MA) in Public History at Sac State.
