Stewart Moredock Mathematics
Dr. Stewart Moredock, graduate of the US Naval Academy (‘39) and survivor of the battle of Guadalcanal during WW II, received his Ph.D in Mathematics from the College of Engineering, UC Berkeley (‘49). Dr Moredock was hired in 1950 by Dr. Guy West, founding President of Sacramento State College, who was recruiting faculty to teach in the spring of ‘50 for the Division of Science and Mathematics with Dr. Hal Draper, dean of the department. In 1954, Dr. Moredock became the assistant division chairman of Math and Sciences, and spent a majority of his time teaching math, supervising student teachers, and writing math textbooks of various sorts. In 1960-1962, Dr. Moredock was asked to be the lecturer for TV series course in math for elementary school teachers, hosted by Stanford University. A copy of the series was given to the college extension program, and the proceeds of this series were donated to the college, which helped pay for the campus carillon in the mid ’60’s.
Dr. Moredock retired from teaching in Spring of 1993, celebrating 43 years at Sac State, now called CSU, Sacramento. In June, 2002, Dr. Moredock passed away. In his trust, he directed the creation of the Moredock Mathematics Endowment, the proceeds to be used for “broad purpose” by the Math dept. Scholarship, administrative needs, continuing education, were all appropriate uses of the fund. Dr. Moredock loved the college, the intellect of its staff, and the diversity of its students.
