'Day of Happiness' Celebrated by Sacramento State

Sac State Happiness Day

1st Sac State Happiness Day

My lab spent two semesters and dedicated countless hours in the 22-23 AY to organize the 1st Sac State Happiness Day. We wanted to deliver the messages that happiness matters, it is a necessity in our lives, and it is within reach. I believe we accomplished our mission. In addition to the coverage of the event at Sac State news and social media, the 1st Sac State Happiness Day also received attention in the local media. Direct links to the videos that highlighted our department can be found here and here. Also note that two psychology seniors were featured in the news and videos.

Changes in Happiness and Feedback

A total of 50 participants completed brief questionnaires online assessing their happiness and life satisfaction as they entered the event room and left the room. The corresponding effect sizes (Cohen’s d) for increases in happiness and life satisfaction were 1.29 and .51, respectively (please see the table for means and standard deviations). The effect size for happiness is impressive and shows that the event made a difference in the happiness of the participants. Also, the overall enjoyment rate of the event was 88% and 58% of the participants reported that they would do something special on March 20 (International Day of Happiness). Finally, the participants provided feedback on the event via an open-ended question. These comments are provided below.

Gratitude Events on Campus

Meliksah Demir and members of his research lab organized four Gratitude Events in the main lobby at the University Union in Spring 2022, Fall 2023, and Spring 2023 (there was not a flyer for the last event but photos are attached). More than 300 Sac State students and staff participated across the four events. Participants had a chance to learn about gratitude, how to practice it, and its benefits on mental health. They also learned what Sac State students were grateful for in general by reading anonymous entries placed in gratitude jars. Importantly, participants shared with us what they were grateful for and decorated the gratitude wall with their post-it notes (e.g., I am grateful for Sac State because). Finally, 75 participants wrote thank you cards to their professors in a private booth, which were delivered to the recipients on our campus. This is one of the signature events of our lab and was well-received by our community. We will continue with event on our campus in the future AYs.
The event in Spring 2022 was publicized on the Sac State Facebook Page and detailed and additional photos from the first event are available here. Sample photos from the other events are presented below.
