Sacramento State Campus Climate Surveys

At Sacramento State, we are committed to understanding our campus climate and responding to the needs of our community. As part of that commitment, we use surveys that elicit feedback from students, faculty, staff, and administrators on topics relevant to the climate on our campus. Below you will find more detailed information regarding the recent undergraduate student campus climate survey (Spring 2019 NACCC Survey ) as well as the 2018 faculty, staff, and administrator campus climate survey (Results of the 2018 Sacramento State Campus Climate Survey). The results of these surveys and correlating feedback will be used in the creation of campus plans.

2019 National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climates

In spring 2019, Sacramento State participated in the USC Race and Equity Center’s National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climates (NACCC), a 15-minute, web-based undergraduate student survey focused on students’ feelings about mattering, inclusion, and racial climate on campus. Sacramento State chose to participate in the survey to better understand the experiences of our students related to issues of race and racial climate and to identify opportunities for improving the campus climate for all our students.

The NACCC survey was administered to Sacramento State students from Monday, February 4, through Friday, March 15, 2019. Undergraduate students received an email with a link to the survey and students completing the survey were entered into drawings for one of more than 200 gift cards valued at $10 or more; the grand prize was a $150 gift card.

The areas of inquiry for the NACCC survey are:

  • Impact of External Environments
  • Mattering and Affirmation
  • Cross-racial Engagement
  • Encounters with Racial Stress
  • Racial Learning and Literacy
  • Appraisals of Institutional Commitment

Sacramento State students completed a total of 5,643 surveys, which is a 21% survey completion rate. Sacramento State received its NACCC survey results and report in fall 2019. The Sacramento State 2019 Administration Report and Recommendations (the “Report”) provides a breakdown of response rates by selected demographic characteristics, including gender identity, racial identity, class year, and age.

Survey Results

In fall 2019, the NACCC released the Sacramento State 2019 Administration Report and Recommendations (the “Report”). The Report summarizes the NACCC, its administration at

Sacramento State, and provides both results and recommendations by content area, which were the same as the six areas of inquiry.

Results of the 2018 Sacramento State Campus Climate Survey

Sacramento State administered the 2018 Sacramento State Campus Climate Survey campus to assess the experience of faculty, staff, and administrators. Thank you to those who provided feedback on the results of the survey by either sending in written comments, engaging in the April 4, 2019 Campus Forum, or participating in the small group discussions held in April/May 2019.

In response to the survey and feedback, Sacramento State is taking immediate action in a number of ways and has committed to ongoing efforts as well. Sacramento State is working to improve the campus climate by addressing the five major themes that emerged in the process:

  • Community Building
  • Inclusive Excellence Training
  • Recruitment and Retention
  • Workplace Satisfaction
  • Inclusive Practices
