Sacramento State Communities of Practice

Communities of Practice focus on programming, networking, and various activities that are in alignment with campus signature initiatives such as antiracism and inclusive campus plan, anchor, student success, and strategic planning. The goal of CoPs is to advance professional practice and build pipelines to close equity gaps in leadership, opportunities, and access.

Latina Mentoring Network

The Latina Mentoring Network’s (LMN) mission is to promote mentoring, community building, and provide a gathering space for Latinas faculty, staff, and students on campus. The LMN serves as a resource to help provide career growth and leadership opportunities for Latinas. The LMN provides a place for members to have access to mentors, networks, and professional resources.

Problem of Practice

There are approximately 37% of the Sacramento State student body who identifies as Latinx. Yet, when examining the presence and representation of Latinx staff, faculty, and administrators in leadership, there is a gap. Through mentorship, femtorship, sponsorship, and guidance, the Latina Mentoring Network will intentionally provide growth opportunities, both personally and professionally, enhance career pathways, offer retention strategies, and build a pipeline of next generation Latina leaders.

Legacy - Black Women's Professional Collaborative

Legacy – Black Women’s Professional Collaborative (Legacy) is a Sacramento State community of practice. The collaborative provides femtors (female mentors), collective support, belonging, and navigational tools for individuals who identify as Black women administrators, faculty, staff, and students at Sac State. We aim to create a restorative, resilient, and responsive network of Black women who will develop the capacity to resist all forms of oppression and support one another so that we excel as we advance toward our personal and professional goals.

Problem of Practice

At Sacramento State, we've noticed a decline in the number of Black faculty and staff in recent years. Unfortunately, the departure of Black women professionals from historically white institutions is not a new trend. As Black women working in higher education, we understand the many hurdles that hold us back from success—things like not having enough of us around, facing both obvious and subtle racism, feeling isolated, and dealing with unfair expectations because of our race and gender (Hughes & Howard-Hamilton, 2003).

What We're About

Legacy is a space where we openly share our experiences, talk about our challenges, and celebrate our successes. Here, we create an environment for conversations and support, tackling feelings of isolation head-on and figuring out ways together to overcome the obstacles that Black women face in academia.

Our community of practice brings together our collective wisdom and strength to build a more inclusive and supportive environment where everyone can thrive. We achieve this through activities that encourage personal growth, opportunities for career development, and fementoring (female mentoring) students to help them succeed. Join us as we work together to be architects of our own legacy of success here at Sac State.
