Hornet Memories

The Sacramento State Alumni Association (SSAA) has partnered with the Oral History Project to create something special for all Hornets! Representatives from the Oral History Project will be reaching out to alumni like you by postcard, email, and phone in the coming weeks to capture your Sac State story. Alumni experiences will help build a special Sac State history book.

The Project

The Sacramento State Alumni Association (SSAA) has partnered with PCI* (also known as Publishing Concepts, Inc.) to produce a Hornet Memories Oral History Publication. Representatives from PCI working on the Oral History Project will be reaching out to our alumni by postcard, email, and phone in the coming weeks to get your story. This project allows us to hear about your personal experiences from your time at Sacramento State and how the school helped shape your life since then. Your story will help us build this special Hornet Memories book to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Sacramento State. And, while we have you on the phone, we want to make sure your contact information is up-to-date.

PCI Partnership

With our limited resources, we'd never be able to tackle a project like this. By partnering with PCI* (Publishing Concepts, Inc.), we're able to access their trained staff of real, live human beings who are excited to listen to what you have to share. PCI will also help collect and assemble the stories into the Hornet Memories book that we can share with all Sacramento State alumni.

*PCI is a family owned business based in Dallas, TX that has published directories for educational institutions, fraternities, sororities, and military organizations across the nation for over 100 years.

What to look for:

Below is an example of a postcard you will receive in the mail. This is an official postcard from the Sacramento State Alumni Association, distributed by our partner PCI. They will also send an email, if we have an address on file for you. Once you receive the postcard or an email, please follow the instructions to update your information and set up an interview time to share your Hornet Memories!

What Sac State memory will you share?

Your story is part of Sacramento State's history, and we want to know how your alma mater has impacted you. The Oral History Project is looking for stories about career success, love stories, first-generation graduate stories, or any story you want to share about Sacramento State or how it influenced your life.

  • Is there a faculty or staff member who had a profound impact on your life?
  • Did you meet your sweetheart at Sac State?
  • Was there a defining moment at Sac State that helped shape your future?
  • Have connections you made on campus turned to lifelong friendships?
  • Where you on campus during a historical moment?

Have you moved?

As part of this project, we are also taking this opportunity to help make it easier for you to stay connected to Sacramento State. PCI will help us collect updated contact information from those of you who may have moved and inadvertently lost touch with your alma mater.

What's next?

If you haven't already, you will recieve a postcard and email from PCI, on our behalf, with two important invitations:

  • An invitation to update and verify your contact information to strengthen our Hornet alumni network and to keep you updated on the latest school developments.
  • An invitation to share your Sac State experience. What are your fondest memories from your time on campus? PCI has a dedicated team ready to record your stories.

The PCI team will collect stories until January 2023. After that, they will enter a post-production phase of editing all the stories and data. The plan is to distribute the book in August 2023.

Do I have to buy something?

No. This project is being done at NO COST to the Sacramento State Alumni Association. The project is completely funded by the alumni who choose to purchase the Hornet Memories book that will be produced at the end of the project. Various book packages will be offered.

PCI will also offer you the option to purchase other Sacramento State Alumni branded merchandise. You are welcome to purchase these items, but you are not required to do so to participate in the project or order the Hornets Memories book.

Again, we'd never be able to embark on a project like this without the support of our amazing alumni and the partnership with PCI. We sincerely thank every person that participates and chooses to purchase the book.

What information will be printed?

The only information that is included in the publication is your name, class year and degree, along with the story and photo that you provided. No contact information is printed. When you call to update your contact information, it will only be used to update your alumni record with Sacramento State.

You may revoke consent for your story and/or photo to appear any time before January 13, 2023, by contacting PCI’s customer service helpdesk at 1-800-982-1590 or customerservice@publishingconcepts.com.

How will information I provide be used?

PCI is committed to protecting your information. The names, addresses, and information provided to PCI for the publication of the Hornet Memories Oral History Project will be held confidential by PCI, except to the extent that they are utilized in, or in the preparation of, the Oral History Project and except as required by court order or law. Upon completion of the project, PCI will redact PII (Personal Identifiable Information) from any and all electronic files that we have supplied or were produced by PCI in connection with the production of the Oral History Project.
