The LegiSchool Project's Fall semester featured two Virtual Town Halls on pressing policy issues, moderated by high school students and continuing our “by students, for students” vision.

October’s Virtual Town Hall, “Housing the Unhoused,” moderated by Beckman High School’s Calvin Cho from Irvine, discussed homelessness in California and the different programs available to adults, families and student who seek secure housing.

Participating in the town hall were Lisa Engel from the Assembly Committee on Housing; Misa Lennox from the office of Senate President Pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins; Laurissa M. Wells from the NAACP; Julius Austin from the Sacramento Promise Zones/SHRA; Sarah O’Daniel from Housing Choice Voucher and Homeless Innovations; and Danielle Muñoz from Sac State’s Crisis Assistance & Resource Education Support program.

December’s Virtual Town Hall, “Pitfalls of Social Media,” shifted to a different policy issue. Student moderators, Hannah Lupse from Mira Loma High School of Sacramento and David Kim from Sage Hill School of Newport Beach, discussed the legal complexities of social media and how difficult it is to regulate internet content on the state level.

Panelists were Daren Bournstein from the Cyber Threat Intelligence Branch California/Cybersecurity Integration Center (Cal-CSIC); Landon Klein from the Assembly Standing Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection; and Marvin Deon from Common Sense Media.

Legischool's four annual Virtual Town Halls are moderated by high school students from across California and address the state’s different policy issues. The majority of audiences consists of high school students, high school teachers, principals and counselors, as well as educators and students in higher education. With each event, the mission is to empower young people and engage them in state government.
