Socialist Popular Culture (officially entitled "A Cultural History of Russia" for Spring 2024 only)

Catalog Description: A historical survey of popular culture and mass culture in the Soviet Union and other socialist states in the twentieth century. Emphasis on the role of political and economic systems in cultural production, the relationship between culture producers and audiences, and interactions between socialist and nonsocialist countries as expressed in a variety of genres and media. Focus on film and music with references to literature, social pastimes, and the performing and visual arts.
