Get to know Dr. Wassmer's research background and focus.

A profile of Professor Wassmer’s passion for issues related to education policy and his motivation for teaching a course on this subject to education doctorate (EdD) students at Sac State.

With others, Professor Rob Wassmer describes how cities are engines of well-being. But in many ways, their performance is handicapped by policy affected by ignorance, inertia, racism, and other forms of inequity. In this presentation, Professor Wassmer offers the argument that the presence of “affordable” housing, be it rental or owner-occupied, distributed throughout a metropolitan area is essential to the well-being of its lower-income households, the region’s overall economic productivity, offering equal access to K-12 education opportunities, and minimizing the region’s greenhouse gas emissions. This talk lays out California’s history, institutions, laws, and practices that allow such to continue. It also covers what the State has done to overcome this situation and why it is politically difficult to do more.

A recording of Professor Wassmer’s participation in a forum sponsored by the California Apartment Association on Barriers to new housing in California.  What makes California a unique place to build?  What are the challenges to new construction in California cities, and how might we learn from other states?

As the previous Chairperson of Sac State’s MPPA Program, Professor Wassmer offers a brief overview of the courses taken to earn the degree and how they uniquely integrate the interdisciplinary study of policy and administration that makes this program unique in its offerings for the Sacramento Area student.
