Reading Response: Why I Don't Let Students Cut My Class

Questions to Answer:

1. According to the author, what is the probable effect of student absences on the student missing class? on the instructor? on other students in the class?

2. In high school, what motivated you to cut class (if you did)? What motivated you to attend class?

3. College professors face difficult choices about how much to monitor their students' attendance and participation. On one hand, student success is directly related to their attendance in class and the timely completion of assignments. On the other hand, college students are adults, free to choose to succeed or fail, and accountable for their own actions.

This question has three parts:

1 & 2. Make one strong argument on each side of the issue, one in favor of tight supervision of students, and one in favor of giving students total freedom.

3. Then describe what you think the responsibility of faculty members should be in monitoring student attendance and participation. For example, should they take attendance? call students when they miss class? accept late work? remind students of missing work?
