Your Sacramento State journey begins here.

The New Student & Family Convocation is Sacramento State's official welcome for newly admitted first-year, transfer, and graduate students and family members, friends, and supporters who have helped them reach this milestone.

Held each spring and fall, Convocation is more than a ceremony, it's the beginning of your story as a Hornet. As the University's official induction into the Hornet Family, this celebratory tradition recognizes your accomplishments, introduces you to Sacramento State's values and traditions, and marks the start of your academic journey.

A highlight of the ceremony is the Hornet Pinning Ceremony, where students and their supporters exchange commemorative pins as a symbol of belonging and the community that will support them throughout their time at Sacramento State.

Convocation and Commencement serve as the bookends of your collegiate experience. Convocation celebrates where your journey begins; Commencement celebrates all you've accomplished along the way.

We invite you and your supporters to join us as we officially welcome you to the Hornet Family.

Location: University Ballroom
Ceremony #1: 5 – 6 p.m.
Hornet Family Reception: 6 – 6:50 p.m.
Ceremony #2: 7 – 8 p.m.

All newly admitted first-year, transfer, and graduate students are invited to attend Convocation. Each student may register for themselves and up to three guests, including family members, friends, or other supporters.

Convocation is held in the University Union Ballroom.

Eligible students may register themselves and up to three guests by completing the online registration form.

Doors open approximately 30 minutes before each ceremony. Students and guests are encouraged to arrive early to allow time for check-in and seating.

Yes! A Hornet Family Reception will be held between the two ceremonies from 6 – 6:50 p.m. at Serna Plaza. Students, families, supporters, faculty, and staff are invited to enjoy light refreshments and celebrate together.

Complimentary parking will be provided for registered attendees. Parking instructions and a complimentary parking permit will be emailed to students prior to the event.

Parking will be available in Parking Structure III.

There is no formal dress code for students or guests. We encourage business casual or attire that is comfortable for photographs and this special occasion.
