Tuition Assistance (TA)

Tuition Assistance (TA) is a benefit that may pay up to 100% for the tuition expenses to eligible members of the U.S. Armed Forces (active duty/reserve/guard). Each branch of service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application processes, and restrictions. The tuition fees are usually paid directly to the institution by the individual branch of service. Please contact your command/Education Liaison Representative for more information regarding the appropriate paperwork. Once the paperwork is complete, please email erins@csus.edu for details regarding reimbursement procedures.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Prospective students need to contact his/her unit’s Education Service Officer and/or military counselor prior to enrolling into courses at Sac State.
2. Students that are registered/enrolled should have already uploaded their degree plan on their respective military portal – if this step is not done, please do so.
3. Students will upload the specific semester’s schedule on their respective military portal.
4. The respective military branch will approve/deny the student’s Tuition Assistance request.
5. Once approved, the student submits the request to Erin Smith in Bursar’s Office (Lassen Hall 1003)
6. The Bursar’s Office will review the courses listed and then adjust the student’s account accordingly.

Cal Vet Tuition Fee Waiver

The College Fee Waiver for Veteran Dependents benefit waives mandatory system-wide tuition fees at any State of California Community College, California State University, or University of California campus. This program does not cover the expense of books, parking or room and board.

These are some considerations and limitations to keep in mind when using the CalVet Tuition Waiver at Sac State:

• The CalVet Fee Waiver cannot be used for programs offered through the College of Continuing Education (CCE)*
• The CalVet Fee Waiver is available for Fall and Spring semesters only. It cannot be used during Summer Session or Winter Intersession.
• The waiver applies to mandatory systemwide tuition only and does not cover campus-based mandatory fees or other charges.
• The Veterans Success Student Resource Center (VSSRC) does not approve or deny CalVet Fee Waiver applications. Applications must be submitted through your local County Veterans Service Office (CVSO).
• You must reapply each calendar year for the upcoming academic year to continue receiving this benefit.

The Veterans Success Student Resource Center does not determine eligibility or approve CalVet Fee Waiver applications. Eligibility is determined by your local County Veterans Service Office (CVSO). Once your approved waiver is submitted, our office will redeem the waiver and forward it to the Bursar's Office for processing.

*The CalVet Fee Waiver cannot be used for programs offered through the College of Continuing Education (CCE), as these programs are not eligible for this state benefit.

How to Submit Your CalVet Tuition Fee Waiver

If your CalVet Tuition Fee Waiver has been approved, send your approval letter to the Veterans Success Student Resource Center for processing.

To Submit:
Save or forward your CalVet Approval Letter (with your 16-digit redemption code) as a PDF.

Include your:
Full Name
Sac State Student ID

Email the PDF to vets@csus.edu

*All CalVet Tuition Fee waivers are processed in the order received. Once your waiver has been processed, a confirmation email will be sent to your Sac State email account.
