These are some considerations and limitations to keep in mind when using the Cal Vet Tuition Fee Waiver at Sac State:

  • The Cal Vet Tuition Waiver CANNOT be used for programs/degrees that are managed by the College of Continuing Education (CCE). Visit the CCE Programs and Services Page to learn about the degrees/program managed by CCE.
  • The Cal Vet Tuition Waiver can ONLY be used for the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • It CANNOT be used for Summer Session AND Winter Intersession.
  • The Cal Vet Tuition Waiver waives mandatory system-wide tuition fees only; it does NOT waive campus-based mandatory fees. Visit the Bursar's Office Page to learn about tuition and campus-based fees.
  • It does NOT cover books, parking, or room & board.
  • The Veterans Success Center (VSC) does NOT approve or deny the Cal Vet Tuition Waiver Application; the application needs to be submitted to a County Veterans Service Office. Visit the CalVet Page to learn more about the Cal Vet Tuition Waiver and to find a County Veterans Service Office.
  • Student should renew/re-apply at the beginning of every calendar year (January to April) for the upcoming academic year.

Tuition Assistance (TA)

Tuition Assistance (TA) is a benefit that may pay up to 100% for the tuition expenses to eligible members of the U.S. Armed Forces (active duty/reserve/guard). Each branch of service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application processes, and restrictions. The tuition fees are usually paid directly to the institution by the individual branch of service. Please contact your command/Education Liaison Representative for more information regarding the appropriate paperwork. Once the paperwork is complete, please email erins@csus.edu for details regarding reimbursement procedures.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Prospective students need to contact his/her unit’s Education Service Officer and/or military counselor prior to enrolling into courses at Sac State.
  2. Students that are registered/enrolled should have already uploaded their degree plan on their respective military portal – if this step is not done, please do so.
  3. Students will upload the specific semester’s schedule on their respective military portal.
  4. The respective military branch will approve/deny the student’s Tuition Assistance request.
  5. Once approved, the student submits the request to Erin Smith in Bursar’s Office (Lassen Hall 1003)
  6. The Bursar’s Office will review the courses listed and then adjust the student’s account accordingly.
