Meet Duke

The transition to college life can be ruff (pun intended)!

However, you don't have to go through it alone. Sac State Student Health, Counseling & Wellness Services is thrilled to introduce Duke, our official campus therapy dog!

Weighing in at 130 pounds, Duke is a gentle giant. Part Newfoundland, part Doodle, Duke's only mission is to provide comfort, calm, and connection for every member of the Hornet Family.

Thank You, Kaiser!

We are incredibly grateful to the Kaiser Foundation for providing the generous funding that made it possible to bring Duke to the Hornet Family. Their commitment to mental health access has created a unique and valuable resource dedicated to supporting the physical, mental, and overall well-being of all Sac State students.

Why Duke? (The Science of the Snuggle)

Duke was named in honor of Duke Kahanamoku, the Hawaiian waterman known for his grace, strength, and spirit of aloha — qualities we see in our Duke every day.

Duke is more than a fluffy face; he's a highly trained member of our wellness team! His presence is proven to help students in the following ways:

Benefit The Student Impact
Instant Stress Relief Just five minutes of petting Duke can lower your cortisol levels (a stress hormone). It's like a mini-meditation session! (Johns Hopkins Medicine)
Reducing Anxiety His calm, non-judgmental nature provides a perfect anchor when you feel overwhelmed, making counseling sessions or check-ins feel easier.
Fostering Connection Duke is a social magnet! He creates a positive, welcoming environment, making it simple to smile, chat with others, and remember you're part of a supportive community.
Supporting Mental Health Whether you're dealing with homesickness, exam stress, or grief, Duke offers silent, unconditional support.

How Duke Strengthens Our Counseling Services

  • Duke represents the heart of our holistic counseling model — one that goes beyond traditional therapy rooms.
  • He helps make our space more welcoming, approachable, and “human.”
  • Students experiencing anxiety, stress, or grief see Duke and instantly feel his calming, warm presence, which can make them more open to additional services.
  • He’s a reminder that support can come in many forms, from professional care to compassionate connection.

Where to Find the Big Guy

Duke loves meeting new students, getting head scratches, and posing for photos.

On-Campus Hangouts:

  • The WELL: Duke will often make rounds in high-traffic student areas. Look for him at the lobby or in the Counseling Services waiting area.
  • Counseling Sessions: Duke can join individual or group counseling sessions as a grounding presence, helping to ease tension and promote open conversation.
  • Campus Events and student activities.
