Dean of Students, Student Engagement & Success Spring Celebrations

As we embark on the home stretch of the spring semester, I am excited about the warm days ahead, and the various events and programs that will occur in the coming days and weeks. There are some amazing people doing some wonderful things in the sub-division of Student Engagement and Success (SES). We also have some exciting successes and staff updates to share:

Office of Student Conduct

The Office of Student Conduct welcomes Tiffany Northern (made at Sac State!) to the team. She transferred to Sacramento State from Sacramento City College in 2009. Her experience as a community college student shaped her commitment to equity and student success, inspiring her to pursue a career in higher education. In her new role as Assistant Director in the Office of Student Conduct, Tiffany looks forward to supporting students’ growth, accountability, and success while upholding the values of the university community.

Student Athlete Resource Center (SARC)

The Student Athlete Resource Center (SARC), under wonderful leadership from Jenna Paulk and her team, welcomed four amazing interns (Megan Kritscher, Austin French, Abel Ordaz and Gavin Davis-Smith) this year. They have allowed the SARC to increase the amount of academic support services provided to student-athletes, coaches and community. They offer more opportunities for individualized academic support, exam proctoring, study halls, proactive communication, and reporting services. This ‘fantastic four’ is very much appreciated, and the effort and care they put into their work every day is very noticeable. Other items of note from the SARC:

  • In Fall 2025 our student athletes recorded an overall GPA of 3.201 and a term GPA of 3.143. Our top women’s team was Women’s Golf and our top men’s team was Baseball.
  • 53 new student athletes were onboarded this spring (9 freshman + 44 transfers)
  • This spring the SARC is currently meeting with an average of 105 student-athletes weekly
  • Preparations are currently underway for summer and fall registration including individual academic sessions with all student athletes
  • Take a peek at the newly updated SARC website, and the Instagram has been re-launched @sarc_sacstate. Give them a follow!

Career Center

The Career Center would like you to know, just in case students you work with missed the recent Spring Career Fairs, many employers from industries including government, education, corporate, and non-profit sectors, are still hiring. Students can log in with their Saclink account to Handshake for Job Postings as well as search for more Career Events. In addition, if students you know are graduating this May, please encourage them to visit the Career Center and take the First Destination Survey. Students simply need to join a drop in or request career counseling appointments (virtual or in person) via EAB.

Apply to Sac State College Corps by April 1! The Career Center partnered with California Volunteers to host a campuswide fair on March 12th for the College Corps program, where students can earn up to $10,000 by completing up to 450 hours of service in areas like K–12 education, climate action, and food security. There is still time to apply with the priority deadline for College Corps applications set for April 1st . The program is open to undergraduate students from all majors.

Career Center Presentations. If your unit is interested in partnering to embed career-related presentation topics in your courses or programming, from career discovery and researching your direction, to career and job search resources, skills in the workplace, to resume and cover letter support. Due to the high volume of requests, please submit no more than two presentations for one course or program.

Academic Advising Center (AAC)

The Academic Advising Center (AAC) continues to be the lead for GE/GR advising on campus. The AAC maintains successful partnerships throughout Sac State, and provides information and support while advising thousands of students every semester. The AAC provides different modalities of advising to meet students where they are (in-person, virtual and drop-ins appointments), and all campaigns are up and running (FYP, SYS, Undeclared/EI, Transfer Program and Disqualified/Dismissed). In addition, Integrated & CARC advising is going strong, and the AAC launched campus-wide 1st and 2nd year GE/GR training this academic year, beginning in Fall 2025 (1st cohort) and (2nd cohort).

Guardian Scholars Program (GSP)

This academic year has been a remarkable one for the Guardian Scholars Program (GSP). They currently have the highest enrollment across the CSU system, with 284 students registered. This milestone reflects both the growing need for their services and the strength of our community. Throughout the spring semester, students have had the opportunity to engage in a variety of enriching experiences. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners, including Continuity Consulting who hosted a weekend retreat in the snow alongside five other CSU campuses. Events with campus partnerships such as the Pride Center and Women’s Resource Center have provided valuable opportunities for social engagement and community-building. Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome Senator Angelique Ashby to the Guardian Scholars Center.

Important Announcements

Please save the date for the 2026 Deans’ Leadership and Excellence Awards (May 5th, 3-5pm, University Union Ballrooms). Kudos to Luis Gomez for his leadership in the planning.

Finally, our student assistants are fantastic and deserve a round of applause for not only the services they provide to the Division, but the campus overall. Stop by and say hello to them when you can!

Take some time to catch your breath, take a walk, and no matter what is going on around us, ponder this: the world, overall, is still a beautiful place. Let’s, at the very least, strive to be happy.
