SWANA Week is a campus-wide celebration of Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) Heritage Month, honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of SWANA communities. Join us for a full week of performances, workshops, art, and community gatherings centered on connection, learning, and celebration.

What is SWANA?
SWANA stands for Southwest Asian and North African, a term used to describe communities often grouped under “Middle Eastern” or “MENA.” For more information, please visit our “What is SWANA” page.

SWANA Week Kickoff: Cultural Showcase
Celebrate the start of SWANA Week with a showcase of art, poetry, performance, and creative expression by SWANA students and community members. Enjoy regional appetizers and drinks while exploring the rich stories and talents of the SWANA region.

Mapping SWANA: Histories, Identities, Futures
Join us for an educational workshop focused on SWANA histories, identities, and cultural perspectives. The session will provide context and insight into themes relevant to SWANA communities. The topic of this presentation will be announced soon.

Stitching Stories: A Tatreez Workshop
Learn the art of tatreez, a traditional embroidery practice used to tell stories and preserve heritage across the SWANA region. No experience needed, materials and guided instruction will be provided.

Diwan Café: Coffee, Culture, Community
Step into a cozy café space featuring traditional teas, coffee, sweets, and cultural games. Come connect, relax, and build community through conversation and shared traditions.

Amal & Action: A SWANA Community Reception
Join us to celebrate community, progress, and a shared vision for the Sac State SWANA community. Gather with students, alumni, community members, and campus partners to connect, honor how far we’ve come, and turn hope into action for a stronger future together.
