Painting La Comuniversidad

Three Murals of the Royal Chicano Air Force

February 12 – May 1, 2026

The University Galleries is pleased to present Painting La Comuniversidad: Three Murals of the Royal Chicano Air Force, a landmark exhibition exploring the legacy of the artist and activist collective founded in Sacramento in the 1970s. The exhibition foregrounds the educational and community impact of mural making as it emerged through the individual and collective projects of the RCAF. Curated by Janina Lopez, Art History PhD candidate and Sacramento State alumna, the exhibition brings together large-scale reproductions of three RCAF murals located in Sacramento along with posters, photographs, and archival materials. Additionally, the show highlights Barrio Art, an art education program started at Sacramento State by RCAF founders Jose Montoya and Esteban Villa, which continues to train art education students today.
