Financial Wellness for Employees
As part of your comprehensive benefits package, Sac State employees have a wide variety of incredible financial resources to help you through their entire employment life cycle from start to finish. Whether you’re just beginning your career or just about to retire, the CSU has you covered with a wealth of ways to make your financial dreams a reality.
Employee Economic Hardship Grant
Sac State has established an emergency fund designed to provide short-term financial support for eligible employees who are faced with a temporary economic hardship. Grants are awarded up to $1,000 based on need, and do not need to be repaid.
Financial Planning with Fidelity
Employees are offered the opportunity to work with Fidelity Investments on creating retirement savings plans. Fidelity representatives visit Sac State on a regular basis to provide one-on-one investment counseling.
Financial Planning with Savings Plus
The State of California works with Savings Plus to administer a variety of savings and retirement programs for state employees. Their services range from one-on-one financial counseling to targeted investment planning for financial success throughout career and retirement years.
Savings Plus Financial Services
Weekly workshops provide Sac State employees with impactful financial planning, guidelines, advice, and resources. Employees are encouraged to take advantage of these engaging and insightful workshops and trainings taught by financial experts from across California. Employee attendance is not tracked by Sac State.
Student Loan Forgiveness
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer. Under this program, CSU employees may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance due to their Direct Loan Program loans if they meet the criteria of the program. Program information is available on the Department of Education's Federal Student Aid website.
Please refer to the Verification of Employment page for the process to submit an online
PSLF request. Once employment has been verified, the U.S. Department of Education reviews the application and determines qualification for the PSLF Program.
For help navigating the process and deadlines, consider joining an external PSLF Program support group on social media such as Facebook.
Tuition Fee Waiver and Reduction
The CSU Fee Waiver and Reduction Program provides eligible Sac State employees the opportunity to enroll in work-related courses necessary for improving job skills, or the opportunity to pursue coursework for advancement in the CSU in accordance with an approved Individual Career Development Plan. The Fee Waiver also provides eligible dependants of employees the opportunity to attend classes at the CSU campuses at a reduced rate. To learn more about this program, visit the Fee Waiver and Reduction Program.
Homeownership and Insurance Discounts
Buying or thinking about buying a home, or refinancing your current home? Many mortgage companies offer State of California employees discounts on home purchasing and refinancing options. Employees are encouraged to ask financial institutions if they offer this support.
Discounts are also regularly available from a variety of insurance agencies for car, home, rental, and life policies.
Legal Assistance
For a small monthly fee, employees have access to a team of top attorneys ready to help take care of life’s planned and unplanned legal situations. MetLife Legal Plans works with employees to provide legal advice, solutions, and representation for issues such as estate planning, wills, and living trusts, legal documents and contracts creation or review, e.g., prenuptial agreements and home title deeds, help with identity theft, and many others. (Please note that employees must sign up for this benefit during annual open enrollment.)
Short-term legal counseling is also provided through the Employee Assistance Program, assisting employees with consumer law, divorce and child custody, identity theft, legal forms, estate planning, and other situations.
Online Learning
Check out top-notch financial wellness courses available on LinkedIn Learning, Sac State’s online professional development learning platform. Taught by subject matter experts, courses are constantly updated to reflect current information and are accessible on any device 24/7.
Once an employee's LinkedIn Learning account is activated (usually one business day after hire), simply search for financial wellness topics such as “financial wellness,” “financial literacy,” “retirement,” “credit management,” or “taxes.”
