Be a Part of Calaveras Station
Editorial Process & Student Involvement
Graduate and undergraduate students work as editors and are involved in soliciting and evaluating submissions for possible publication.
Calaveras Station Literary Journal is an annual print-publication, and is presented to the public at a release party at which time published artists read or present their works.
Join Us
Associate editors are responsible for reviewing submissions for guideline adhereance and providing developmental feedback on rejected submissions within their section, communicating with contributors in their section, promoting the journal and its events. Associate editors will be part of the editorial decision for submissions.
Section editors are responsible for reviewing and editing all work in their designated section, communicating with contributors in their section, promoting the journal and its events, and attending meetings. Section editors will be part of the editorial decision for submissions.
Meetings: We meet once a month during open submission and twice a month after the open submission period has closed. Editors are required to attend these meetings. If you are interested, email us at cslj.english@csus.edu with the following information:
- Your name and contact information.
- Your academic standing.
- A brief bio about yourself and why you would like to apply.
- A piece of writing from the same section you are applying for that represents your best work. (i.e., creative nonfiction)
- A list of relevant classes (i.e., creative writing, literature, publication, etc.)
- A statement that reflects your literary aesthetic (which authors, genres, titles you value and are most inspired by)
Submission
Submission Guidelines:
We welcome submissions of: fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, screenplays, essays, and visual art. We will consider genre-bending submissions.
No previously published works are accepted. Simultaneous submissions will be considered, but please alert Calaveras Station if a submission is published elsewhere.
Calaveras Station Arts and Literary Journal acquires one-time rights. All rights subsequently revert to the author.
- Times New Roman, 12pt Font, Double Spaced
- .docx or .doc only
- Subject line of email should include first name, last name, CSLJ submission. Such as: Adrienne Rich – CLSJ Submission
- File name should include title and genre of piece. Such as: Aunt_Jennifer’s_Tigers_Poem.docx
- Please leave name off of manuscripts.
- One file per submission! (you may send multiple files in the email).
- We will consider prose and genre bending submissions.

Two works of up to 5000 words, double-spaced (.doc, .docx format), may be submitted by an individual author per publishing period. Do not include any identifying information within the document.

Please email your previously unpublished Fiction, Poetry, Creative Nonfiction and Essays, Screenplays, and Art submissions as a .doc, .docx, or .jpeg (for art/photographs) attachment to cslj.english@csus.edu
The attachment should NOT have the author’s name or information anywhere in it, just the title(s). If making multiple submissions, you may either send them individually or in the same attachment. In the subject line, please write “Calaveras Station Submission” and the category.

Anyone with original, unpublished, creative work may submit. We accept international submissions.
The open submission period is typically June 1st through December 31st. Publishing typically occurs in May of the following year.

We begin our editorial process in January. Acceptances and rejections are decided by the end March. Everyone who submits will receive an email indicating whether their submissions have been accepted or not.
