About Doctorate in Educational Leadership
Director's Message
Twenty years ago, California decided that the people who lead its public schools and community colleges should have a doctorate created for them — offered by a teaching university, grounded in their work, and scheduled around their jobs. Sacramento State launched the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership in the first wave, and our graduates now serve as principals, deans, directors, and district administrators across this region.
This year, we mark our twentieth anniversary while recruiting the leaders of the next twenty. If you have been leading for a few years and cannot stop thinking about a problem of practice, I would like to hear from you.

Get to know the Ed.D. Program
The Sacramento State Ed.D. program trains the leaders of tomorrow to champion change in the field of Education. The program is a partnership between the Educational Leadership and Public Policy departments—training leaders to address the urgent need for well-prepared individuals to assume key leadership positions in California's schools and community colleges.
Pursuing a Doctorate in Education is not an easy endeavor. Sacramento State supports its Ed.D Candidates through:
- Cohort System: build and maintain relationships with a consistent group of fellow students
- Every-other-weekend classes: schedule designed for working professionals
- Renowned Faculty: steeped in regional and national education issues
- Accelerated Program: 3-year completion schedule
- Face-to-face interaction: build networks with students and faculty
