RPTA Minor Programs

The RPTA Minor Programs in are designed for non-RPTA students who are looking to enhance their education by adding a minor. These minors are a great way to compliment any major and make a great addition to resumes or transcripts. RPTA majors cannot complete a minor program, but are eligible to complete Certificate Programs.

Minor in Recreation Management

The Minor in Recreation Management is designed for non-RPTA majors interested in learning about career areas within the recreation, parks, and tourism fields. The minor can lead to careers in community services, youth leagues and sports, non-profit leadership, adventure recreation, campus recreation, activity programming, experiential education, and destination marketing.

Minor students may also enroll in RPTA Certificates with advisor approval. A Certificate cannot be awarded unless the minor program is completed.

Minor in Non-Profit Management

Non-profit leadership is becoming an essential skill for students planning to work in government, tax-supported, and not-for-profit agencies.

Designed for non-RPTA majors, students pursuing a Minor in Non-Profit Management will gain valuable skills in:

  • writing grants,
  • planning fundraising events,
  • managing volunteers, and
  • working with various populations such as youth, underserved persons, or community professionals.

An emphasis is placed on overall agency management and leadership. Minor students may also enroll in RPTA Certificates with advisor approval. A Certificate cannot be awarded unless the minor program is completed.

Minor in Hospitality and Tourism Management

The Minor in Hospitality and Tourism Management is designed for non-RPTA majors interested in learning about career areas within the hospitality and tourism fields. This broad set of industries can lead to careers in hospitality and event planning, tourism, eco-tourism, activity programming, and destination marketing.

The minor requires 15 units, all of which must be taken in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration. At least 9 units must be upper division, with at least 9 upper division units taken in residence at Sacramento State.

Minor students may also enroll in RPTA Certificates with advisor approval. A Certificate cannot be awarded unless the minor program is completed.

Minor in Park Management

Sacramento is proud of its connection to the outdoors, and is proximate to many outstanding parks and protected areas. This minor is designed for Non-RPTA students interested in careers as park rangers, including the study of visitor management, park law enforcement, natural resource management, and interpretation of environmental and cultural resources. Students have extensive opportunities for travel and outdoor field education in the parks and forests of California.

Career and work opportunities are available with California State Parks, the California Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, the National Park Service, the US Forest Service, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Bureau of Reclamation.

The minor requires 15 units, and must include at least 9 units of upper division coursework taken in residence at Sacramento State.

Minor students may also enroll in RPTA Certificates with advisor approval. A Certificate cannot be awarded unless the minor program is completed.

Minor Program Advising

When students are interested in declaring an RPTA minor program or need RPTA minor advising, they should contact the minor advisor. The minor advisor is a student's primary point of contact within RPTA and can answer questions about declaring an RPTA Minor, requirements, transfer course substitutions, minor course choices, etc.
