Community Days
Each Fall, volunteers from CSU, Sacramento, support the Lambtown in Dixon, CA. The Lambtown Festival is a community event celebrating sheep, lamb, and wool. There are vendors, workshops, competitions, demonstrations, kids' activities, and more during two full days of sheep fun. Subjects include crochet, dyeing, felting, fiber prep, knitting, spinning, and weaving. Lambtown is California's largest sheep and wool event, held on the first full weekend of October. Students support the organization by assisting with media and marketing, vendor set-up and organization, and event planning. Volunteers can come from any major and get free access to the fairgrounds when participating. Lambtown is also a CSUS community partner and offers internships to fashion merchandising and management students.

Last Fall, New Community Partner, Morgan Pence, founder of the Mildred Flora Foundation (MFF), held her first charity fashion show. The MFF team raised 4500.00 for the River City Foodbank. Fashion Merchandising and Management students had the opportunity to manage backstage logistics, set up the stage, coordinate the visual displays and event layouts, organize designer garment racks, and ensure correct model line-ups through runway rehearsals. Students shared their perspective on the volunteer opportunity, stating:
After learning that she wanted to bring the Sacramento community together through a shared passion for fashion, sustainability, and ending food scarcity, I knew volunteering for her charity fashion show was an opportunity I could not miss. – Aubiny GauseI am grateful that the fashion program shared this opportunity with my peers and me. Without it, I would never have had the opportunity to work with talented individuals in my field or to help support a foundation in putting together a purpose-driven event. - Kazong Yang
Spring Semester 2026
Each Spring, volunteers from CSU, Sacramento support Golden State Linen in Chico, CA. Golden State Linen. Golden State Linen is proud to be the only small-scale processor of flax in the United States. They grow, harvest, and process the fiber on our 3.75-acre farm just outside of Chico, in the heart of Northern California. Their crops grow in healthy, carbon-capturing soil. Sandy and Durl, the couple behind Golden State Linen, are working to bring the flax fiber crop to California to strengthen the regional soil system and economy.
Students support the organization by assisting with the flax harvest. Remarkably easy to harvest, the crop is pulled by groups of students, who spend the day helping prepare it for drying. In the process, students learn organic fiber farming and the basics of transforming flax to linen. Golden State Linen is also a CSUS community partner and offers internships to fashion merchandising and management students.
