ORIED Professional Development Opportunities

Fall 2026 Protected Writing Time

Protected Writing Time is back for the Fall 2026 semester and we're looking forward to providing a supportive, structured environment for scholarly writing. Faculty and staff are invited to use Protected Writing Time to focus on research, manuscript development, grant proposals, or other scholarly activities - whatever your research and creative activity agenda requires.

Benefits:

  • A quiet place on campus away from day-to-day distractions
  • Snacks, water, a printer, and writing materials are provided
  • ORIED staff are nearby to answer questions and provide assistance

Sessions will be held in the ORIED Conference Room on the 2nd floor, South side of the Library, room 2520D.

Protected Writing Time attendees do not need a key to enter this room. If the Conference Room is locked, just come to the adjacent ORIED door, and we will let you in.

The room will be maintained and stocked with supplies, and if attendees require assistance, ORIED staff will be available in the adjacent suite.

The room will be available beginning Tuesday, September 15th from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., and will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays each week at the same time. Note: ORIED may occasionally need to use the Conference Room for meetings; we will do our best to schedule around the protected writing time hours, but that may not always be possible.

Lunch and Learn

We have several Lunch and Learn events planned for this semester. We hope you will attend these "brown bag" lunch sessions to eat, listen, learn, and network with your colleagues. If you require any accommodations to fully participate in Lunch and Learn, please notify ORIED by email at least one week before the event.

September 17, 12:00–1:15 p.m. Library #1522

The room will be open from 11:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m. for light refreshments and informal conversation; the panel discussion will take place from noon–1:15 p.m. For planning purposes, please RSVP.

In this roundtable, five faculty members will share their experiences planning for and making the most of sabbatical leave: from developing a strong proposal and deciding between one- and two-semester options to using sabbatical time productively while also making space for rest and rejuvenation. The panel will also discuss transitioning back to regular faculty responsibilities after sabbatical leave. There will be time for audience questions. The event will not be recorded, but a brief written summary will be available afterward on the ORIED website.

Getting and using your free ORCID iD and ORCID record can help you save time and get credit for your work in funding, publishing, and research reporting workflows. Funding organizations, publishers, and research institutions are increasingly requiring or asking for ORCID iDs from researchers, so this workshop will help you make sure you are ahead of the game. In this workshop, we will cover:

  • An overview of the benefits of ORCID for researchers
  • How ORCID can help you save time throughout the research landscape
  • Tips and tricks for keeping your ORCID record up-to-date

What We Learned in Washington: Federal Funding Priorities, Policies, and the Unwritten Rules

Profs. Motallebzadeh and Wang traveled to Washington, DC with a cohort of Cal State faculty from around the system to meet with the CSU Federal Relations team and program leaders at the funding agencies. They will share what they took away about current federal priorities and policies, the present climate for research funding, and the unwritten guidance program officers will offer in person but do not post on their websites. They return to DC in the spring to meet with lawmakers and their staff, so bring the questions and the asks you want carried there on your behalf.

Faculty Forward: Mid-career Faculty Research Support Group

The Mid-career Faculty Research Support Group is designed to support research resilience, renewed scholarly momentum, and sustained excellence among mid-career faculty. Mid-career faculty often assume significant teaching, service, leadership, mentoring, and administrative responsibilities. These demands can make it difficult to maintain consistent time and structure for research, writing, and grant development. This program offers structured peer support for tenured faculty who would like to strengthen, refocus, or reinvigorate their research trajectories.

This program has three main components:

  1. Shared professional development and planning Participants will watch professional development webinars together on selected topics, followed by guided discussion, reflection, and action planning.
  2. Peer feedback on scholarly work In November, participants will take part in a feedback session focused on manuscripts, grant proposals, or other scholarly products.
  3. Ongoing writing accountability Participants will commit to spend at least one hour per week on scholarly activity through online coworking sessions and provide mutual accountability for other group members.

Each Faculty Forward group will meet for approximately 90 minutes per session. Sessions will include shared viewing of selected NCFDD webinars, facilitated discussion, and time for reflection and planning.
Two groups will be offered. Participants will commit to one group for the semester. When scheduling conflicts arise, participants may attend the other group as a make-up option.

Corresponding NCFDD webinars are provided through Sacramento State’s NCFDD webpage. Some sessions may also include campus-specific resources and opportunities, including collaboration with ORIED where relevant. The weekly coworking session schedule will be available later in August.

Summer Research Academy

ORIED was pleased to sponsor the Inaugural Summer Research Academy (SRA) in June. SRA is designed to advance Sacramento State’s research and creative mission by giving faculty the dedicated time, expert guidance, and collaborative support needed to move promising scholarly projects toward completion.

During this focused, weeklong program, faculty developed manuscripts, external grant proposals, and other significant scholarly and creative work already in progress while also engaging in workshops and consultation with campus partners. Most participants left the Academy with a submission-ready or near-submission-ready product.
