1. What is the purpose of this event?

To celebrate Japanese language and culture learning in the Greater Sacramento region through Speech performance.

We sent out our visitations to 17 high schools, 5 community colleges, and 5 universities.

High School Level: Davis Senior High School, Elk Grove High School, Florin High School, Franklin High School, Laguna Creek High School, Monterey Trail High School, Pleasant Grove High School, Cosumnes Oaks High School, Sheldon High School, John F. Kennedy High School, Rosemont High School, C.K. McClatchy High School, Mira Loma High School, Bella Vista High School, Oak Ridge High School, Pleasant Valley High School

Collegiate Level: California State University at Sacramento, California State University at Fresno, California State University at Chico, University of California at Davis, University of Pacific, Sacramento City College, Sierra College, Shasta College, Butte College, San Joaquin Delta College


2. Who can participate in this event? What are the rules?

High School Division 高校の部

  • Each school select two (2) students for the speech contest.

  • One entry per person.

  • All applicants must be non-native speakers of Japanese.

  • The topic of the speech is open. The speech script or content must be his/her own work. You may not use the same speech that was given in any previous contests or events. Teachers can give advice or  guidance, but must not rewrite the student's speech.

  • The length of the speech must be more than 2 minutes and less than 3 minutes. Otherwise, it will be penalized.

  • The script of the speech or the prompt must not be used during the speech.

College/University Division 短大・大学の部

  • Two Divisions:

    Division 1 – Less than 2 years of learning Japanese (Have taken or are currently taking the 1st – 2nd year level Japanese language courses.)

    Division 2 – More than 2 years of learning Japanese (Have taken or are currently taking the 3rd year or higher level of Japanese language courses.)

  • All applicants must be non-native speakers of Japanese.

  • Each college/university can select up to two (2) students for the speech contest in Division 1 and Division 2. This means that Division I for up to 2 people; and Division II for up to 2 people (up to 4 people).

  • The topic of the speech is open. The speech script or content must be his/her own work. You may not use the same speech that was given in any previous contests or events. Teachers can give advice or  guidance, but must not rewrite the student's speech.

  • The length of the speech is be more than 3 minutes and less than 4 minutes. Otherwise, it will be penalized.

  • The script of the speech or the prompt must not be used during the speech.

Please let your Japanese language teacher know if you are interested in participating in this event. We need to know your full name and the title of your presentation. Your teacher is responsible for leting us know.

If your students are interested in participating in this event, please email Naoko McHale <nsmchale@gmail.com> about the names of your students by Friday, March 17, 2017, and the title of each speech by Friday, April 7, 2017.

3. Who can come to the event besides participants?

Anyone in the community is welcome. We recommend that participating students come with their friends and families. You can send invitations to your colleagues and/or school administrators as well.

6. What are the benefits of participating in this event?

For students, we believe that this gives you a chance to get to know students and teachers from other schools and universities.

We will give a certificate and prizes for winners.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation and small prize.

For teachers, we hope that this event will help promote your programs and attract many students to your class.

7. Who will decide these winners?

Our special judges for the contest include community representatives and high school teachers. They are:

  • Mr. Akira Ichioka, Consul and Director of the Japan Information & Cultural Center at the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco
  • Ms. Maiko Tamagawa, Advisor for Educational Affairs at the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco
  • Ms. Junko Hosai, a Japanese language teacher at Aragon High School, San Mateo, California
  • Ms. Maki Watanabe, JPT Trading
  • Mr. Bryan Hollar, Fujitsu America PR Manager

Judging Criteria

  • Basic Requirements:
    • The speech script or content must be his/her own work.
    • The length of the speech should be more than 2 minutes and less than 3 minutes for high school contestants; more than 3 minutes and less than 4 minutes. Otherwise, it will be penalized.
    • The script of the speech or the prompt must not be used during the speech.

  • Judges will base their decisions on the content and presentation of speech.

  • The applicant with the highest total points awarded by the judges will be the winner. There will be award items given at the contest.

We highly encourage students to memorize the speech.

2. Is there a fee?
No fee.

3. Should I dress in costume for our speech?
It is up to you but it should be appropriate!
