Campus Network Infrastructure (CNI) Upgrades

As part of the CSU Common Network Infrastructure (CNI) program, we'll be hard at work upgrading the campus Core Network infrastructure and Access Layer throughout Summer 2023. This project supports the upgrade of our campus network to enhance teaching, learning, and access.

What is the Core Network and Access Layer?
The core network is what transfers our campus network traffic at high speeds. The access layer is what enables host computers and end users (every Hornet) to connect to the campus network.

Upgrade work includes:

  • Upgrading our Core Network and Data Center from 10Gb to 100/200Gb
  • Boosting building network connections from 1Gb up to 10-20Gb
  • Replacing routers, switches, and security firewalls
  • Transitioning all network equipment in the communications rooms of campus buildings

Brief Outages and What to Expect

To reduce impacts to you, we've made every effort to schedule work during before and after-hours timeframes, but some upgrades will unavoidably occur during academic and business hours. Generally, the outages (or "offline" time) will be brief - some mere seconds, others 15 minutes or less - when switching over from our current to new equipment. We'll communicate with building occupants and via SacSend, but you can always check the Campus Building Upgrade Schedule table for when a particular building will be upgraded.

Troubleshooting Tips After Upgrade Work

  • Workstation PCs/laptops will pause (15-20 seconds); you may need to reboot your computer
  • Telephone connections will drop; you may need to unplug/plug your phone back in
  • Campus workstations using Global Protect VPN connections will need to reconnect
  • Individual Wi-Fi access points will restart (laptops will switch to other nearby Wi-Fi access points in the building)
