Sac State sees historic enrollment numbers

Despite significant challenges at the state and federal levels, Sacramento State has seen enrollment continue to climb with record numbers.

Sacramento State set a record with the largest fall enrollment post-COVID at 31,307 students, according to a just-concluded enrollment census.

In March, the University had the highest enrollment in Sac State history for spring at 30,164, exceeding CSU system goals.

During the past 10 years, Sac State’s enrollment has grown 6.7%.

Many colleges and universities throughout the country have experienced years of uncertainty, most markedly since the COVID pandemic temporarily shut down in-person learning in 2020. But Sac State’s head counts have remained steady thanks to significant outreach efforts to students at risk of dropping out, as well as recruiting campaigns aimed at high school and community college students.

Other innovative and collaborative approaches include new academic programs, including the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture Studies, a new Business degree concentration on practical applications of artificial intelligence, and one of the largest Criminal Justice programs in the country. The University also has been working to welcome students from diverse backgrounds and interests. Its Black Honors College, Wileety Native American College, and Combat U sports club are examples of programs designed with those students in mind.

“Our enrollment success this fall is the result of the hard work of a lot of people to make Sacramento State more accessible and welcoming to students from across California and beyond,” said Admissions Director Brian Henley.

“By expanding outreach, strengthening partnerships with high schools and community colleges, and enhancing our support for new and returning students, we’re working to ensure that more students see Sacramento State as their first choice.”

President Luke Wood said the University is determined to give students a good “return on investment” in their academic journeys, providing an education that impacts their lives in meaningful ways.

“Our enrollment numbers are up, which is fantastic news,” said Wood in his Fall Address to the campus community. “These numbers mean we are offering an outstanding, world-class education to even more students.”
