Douglas Gayeton will deliver the keynote at Sacramento State's fifth annual Food Day.

Writer, photographer, filmmaker, and multimedia artist Douglas Gayeton will be the keynote speaker for Sacramento State’s fifth annual Food Day on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Gayeton, who lives on a goat farm near Petaluma, is the author of Local: The New Face of Food & Farming in America (2014, Harper Design) and the previously published, Slow: Life in a Tuscan Town. He also is the director of the short-film series Know Your Food on PBS and founder of the crowd-sourced project Lexicon of Sustainability, which strives to improve the American food system.

He will speak at 7 p.m. in the University Union, Redwood Room. His topic is “You Can Help Fix Our Food System.” Gayeton’s lecture is sponsored by the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies.

“We are thrilled to bring Food Day to the Sacramento State campus for the fifth year in a row,” says Jennifer Campbell, a registered dietician with Student Health & Counseling Services.

“Food Day is a national movement, established by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. It brings awareness to a vision of food that is healthy and affordable, and produced with care for the environment, the farm animals, and the people who grow, harvest and serve it.”

Sac State’s Food Day programs, which are free and open to the public, also include:

Aquaponics Open House – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the STORC (Sustainable Technology Outdoor Research Center) facility, along the American River levee across from Parking Lot 4.

Food and Nutrition (FAN) Club Jamboree – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Library Quad.

Natural Foods Co-op Cooking Demonstrations – Noon, 12:45 and 1:30 p.m. at The WELL.

Food Chains: The Revolution in America’s Fields, a screening of the 2014 documentary about Florida farmworkers’ Fair Food program, which unites growers and retailers to improve working conditions for farm laborers – 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the University Union, Redwood Room. – Dixie Reid
