When is an "Excess Unit Petition Form" necessary?
Students who wish to take additional units beyond the allowable maximum term unit load (i.e. 15-17 units, depending on your Academic Level and Standing) must meet with their Major Advisor and request an 'Excess Unit Petition' form to be submitted on their behalf.
- This process is 'Advisor initiated,' which means students MUST meet with a Major Advisor (ideally assigned advisor, if available) to complete the form.
- During the appointment, the Advisor will confirm if the Student is eligible to meet the excess unit petition requirements.
- After discussing requirements to carry excess unit load and the Student understands responsibiliies to meet requirements, the Major Advisor will complete and submit the 'Excess Unit Petition' OnBase form on the Student's behalf.
- The form will route to the Department Chair, and then to the College Dean to be reviewed. Once complete, the form will route to the Registrar's Office for final review and processing. Student will receive a notification sent to their Sac State email from the Registrar's Office with the result as to whether the request has been 'Approved' or 'Denied.'
When to Apply to Graduate
The ideal timeframe to submit a Graduation Application is:
- A MINIMUM of two (2) semesters BEFORE THE desired/intended Graduation Term/Year, and/or,
- After successfully completing a minimum of 85-units (i.e. Junior standing).
Students are encouraged to schedule a 1:1 advising appointment to check, review, and confirm major program requirements have been completed before applying to Graduate.
After meeting with your ANTH Faculty Advisor and student has confirmed major requirements and course plan for remaining semesters identified,
Students may:
- Go to your My Sac State Student Center Dashboard and students will find a link to "Apply for Graduation."
- IMPORTANT NOTE:
- If Students are 'Eligible to Apply to Graduate' but have yet to submit an application, the "Expected Grad Term" section in your Smart Planner will appear blank (i.e. no information; see sample image below).
- If Students HAVE Applied to Graduate, the 'Graduation Status' will indicate recognition of RECEIPT of the application. *This DOES NOT mean your application has been reviewed and/or confirmed by the Degree Evaluations Office that all majore requirements have been met (see sample image below).
- ONLY WHEN the 'Graduation Status' indicates, "Graduation Evaluation Complete" does this affirm that a student's application has been fully reviewed and confirmed are eligible to graduate. The Graduation Term and Year will be listed above the Graduation Status (see sample image below).

Course Enrollment Deadlines & Timelines
Timelines to Keep In Mind
For ADD Requests submitted *PRIOR* to the start of 1st day of classes,
Current students attempting to add into a course PRIOR to the 1st day of classes MUST:
- OBTAIN and ATTACH/UPLOAD proof of written permission from the Instructor approving their request to add (ex. PDF copy or screenshot of email).
- IF permission is granted, the Student will submit an OnBase Add request form and for Question #4: "Attach Supporting Documents (Optional)" - select, 'Yes.'
- Upload copy of written permission from Instructor. Then, click 'Submit.'
- The Add Request form will then route to the Anth Department. Once all required components have been confirmed, the Add request will be processed, and the Student will receive a confirmation email from the University system.
- If, for any reason, issues arise during the enrollment process, details will be indicated in the comment box (ex. pre-requisite not met, max. allowable unit load exceeded (requiring an Excess Unit Petition form), time conflict with another course, etc.).
NOTE: During SUMMER/WINTER breaks, Faculty/Instructors are ALSO on break. Therefore, Faculty/Instructors are not contractually obligated to respond to emails. However, it is to the Faculty/Instructor's discretion if they so choose to periodically check their email inboxes, and students may/may not receive a response regarding their request for permission to add.
If no Instructor is listed, OR, you are unable to reach the Instructor of the desired course, please wait until closer to the start of the semester and attempt to contact Instructors to seek permission to Add.
Students have the option to attend the course (i.e. if an in-person class), in hopes a seat will become available, or, in the very least, have the opportuntiy to connect with the Instructor directly.
*DROP Requests: Students are able to SELF-DROP through the 1st two (2) weeks of the semester. For additional ADD/DROP Deadline/Timeline information, please see 'ADD/DROP Deadline and Timeline' Reference Chart.
For ADD Requests submitted FROM or AFTER the 1st day of classes,
- Student is to obtain permission to add from Instructor by either attending desired course or via email (i.e. for web/online courses).
- IF permission is granted, students are to submit an OnBase Add Request form via their My Sac State Student Center. Complete the form.
- Once classes have begun, a copy of written permission is no longer necessary, as the Add request will route directly to the Instructor.
- Once form is submitted, it will route to the Instructor to review. The Instructor will either approve or deny the request.
- If request is approved, the form will route to the Department Office for final processing.
*REMINDER: Please reference ADD/DROP Deadline and Timeline Reference Chart for important deadlines and timelines of final days to submit Add/Drop requests, what is required at varying stages of the semester, and how to avoid 'W' or 'WU's. '
"The system says I need a 'permission code' to enroll, where do I get this code?"
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Department of Anthropology DOES NOT provide a 'Permission Code,' even though the University's automated response states as such. This may be a process used by other Departments, however, please note, Dept. of Anth does not utilize such codes.
"I see, "Reserved Seating," but the system won't let me add into the course."
If students attempt to enroll in a course that is FULL but may show, "Reserved Seating," (i.e. with a 'GREEN' check mark, presenting as 'OPEN'), this means the course is FULL at the moment, and seats are reserved for Hornet Launch/Orientation (i.e. for 1st Year Freshman and/or New Transfer students).
WIth that said,
Since the course is, as stated above, likely FULL, this means students will need to obtain permission or written permission from the Instructor to add.
See "IMPORTANT Add/Drop/WIthdraw Request Timelines" section above for detailed guidelines on HOW to obtain permission/written permission from Instructors, based on the TIMELINE of when student's inquiry and/or add request is implemented.
"When is that last day to DROP without a 'W'?"
- Census Date of each semester.
Check "ADD/DROP Deadline and Timeline Reference Chart" above for specific date of active semester and/or the Sac State Academic Calendar webpage.
Major Advisors/Professors
Steps to Find Your Assigned Major Advisor
1. Log-in to your My Sac State Student Center and navigate to your

2. On your right-hand side, you will see a tab title, "Program Advisor."

In this section, an assigned Major Advisor (or, an Advising Dept./Team) will be listed along with their contact information.
3. If students see, "None Assigned," this means you have yet to be assigned a Major Advisor. Please contact the Department of Anthropology via email at anthro@csus.edu and include your FULL NAME, Sac State Student ID#, your major concentration, preferred Faculty Advisor (if applicable), and an Anth Staff will provide assistance in assigning a new Anth Faculty Major Advisor to your profile.
*It is strongly suggested to email your advisor in advance to provide specifics about advising needs.
Why should I meet with my Major Advisor?
- 1st Year Anth Freshman or New Transfer students are required to meet with their assigned Anth Major Advisor within their 1st semester. Failure to complete this requirement will mean a Registration Hold will be placed on students' profile until completed, preventing students from enrollment of classes in subsequent semesters.
- To discuss Major Academic Roadmap and Course Planning
- To receive guidance on Graduation Application Process/Requirements. Ideally completed a minimum of two (2) semesters BEFORE desired/intended Graduation Term/Year and/or after successfully completed a minimum of 85-units (i.e. Junior standing), students are encouraged to schedule a 1:1 advising appointment to check, review, and confirm major program requirements have been completed before applying to Graduate.
- To request an Excess Unit Petition Form. It is required to meet with and obtain permission from student's assigned Major Advisor, if student has met allowable maximum unit load for the semester and wishes to take additional courses. Maximum allowable unit load varies and is based on student's Academic Level (i.e. Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior) and/or Academic Standing (i.e. Good Standing, Academic Probation, Continued Probation).
- To submit Course Substitution and/or Course Waiver requests.
How do I change my Major Advisor?
Contact the Anthropology Department via anthro@csus.edu with your FULL NAME, Sac State Student ID#, current major concentration, whether you are wanting to change concentrations (or not), and any concern(s), if applicable.
- If you do not feel comfortable in listing your reason(s), please feel free to simply identify the *preferred faculty advisor whom you would like to be reassigned.
- If students have any questions, please feel free to contact the Anth Dept. Office.
Major/Minor/Concentrations
Steps to Change Your Major Concentration
Students who wish to change their Major Concentration are advised to:
- Contact and meet with their preferred Faculty advisor of the new major concentration (Ex. CLS to ABA), IF an one is identified/preferred. Students may reference the semester 'Advisors/Faculty Office Hours' PDF link found on the main Anth Department website to locate Advising Faculty contact information.
- If a Faculty Advisor is NOT identified, students may review the Anth Department Meet Us Faculty webpage and review available Faculty Advisor background and special interests to identify who would be a good match.
- It is important for students to meet with an Anth Major Advisor to understand expectations and/or necessary course requirements that may differ from their current major concentration program plan, even though each are within the same Anthropology Bachelor's program.
- When students meet with the preferred Anth Faculty Advisor, a 'Change of Major Concentration' form will be submitted on the student's behalf, and the Faculty submitting the form will automatically be assigned as the student's new program advisor.
If students have any questions, please feel free to contact the Anth Office at anthro@csus.edu.

Yes! The Department offers a Minor program in Anthropology, which often pairs well with other disciplines.
Anthropology Minor Program Requirements
- A Minor in Anthropology requires completion of a total of 18-units, with required twelve (12) units of Anthropology coursework to be upper division (ex. 12-units upper division ANTH courses + 6-units lower division ANTH courses = 18-units).
- Upper division courses are numbered 100 (and above) and must be taken at Sacramento State.
- There are no set 'required' courses. The student's Minor program will be discussed and planned during the 1:1 'Minor Advising' appointment with an Anth Faculty Advisor. Upper Division Anth courses will be identified to meet student's desired program plan.
Steps to Add Anthropology as a Minor Program

Transfer Equivalency/Catalog Rights
What is Transfer Equivalency and when is it necessary?
- Transfer Equivalency applies ONLY to Major Lower Division required courses transferred from colleges for which the CSUS Anthropology Department has approved AND established a Transfer Course Equivalency agreement.
- Credits/units will be automatically transferred and applied to Major requirements IF required courses are within the list of articulated courses in the Transfer Course Equivalency agreement.
- To verify transferable courses according to college, visit assist.org and/or Transfer Equivalency System (TES) to check on established course agreement(s).
What if the course I took shows as, "NO COMPARABLE COURSE" or "Not Articulated" in assist.org or TES?
Students will need to submit a "Transfer Equivalency Review" request to the Anthropology Department to have the specific course(s) assessed to confirm standard requirements are met for the Anth Program at Sac State. Please email the following information to the Anth Department email at anthro@csus.edu.
1. Copy of the Course *SYLLABUS (*not to be confused with a 'course description' of the course, as this will not be accepted, and will delay the review process).
Course syllabus must be from the instructor & semester the course was taken. If students do not have a copy of the original course syllabus, students may contact the Anthropology Dept./Office of the prior institution and request a copy of the specific course syllabus. Institutions should maintain an archive of past course syllabi.
Course syllabus will include (though not limited to) course title, instructor name and contact information, detailed course schedule, assignments and quizzes, textbook information, additional readings or materials related to the course.
2. Course Title (ex. Anthro 1 - Intro to Biological Anthropology)
3. Term and Year course(s) completed (ex. Fall 2024)
4. Name of Institution where course(s) completed (ex. Cosumnes River College)
*If not approved, students will be provided with a reason and instructed to retake the lower division course at Sac State.
What are Catalog Rights?
The Catalog Rights are the specific set of requirements established in the catalog for a specific year, which a student must satisfy to qualify for a degree, certificate, etc.
