This section provides easy access to course communication tools. If you are new to electronic communication you might want to review netiquette guidelines on courtesy, common sense, and general rules concerning language use and abuse. Students enrolled in the course will need to subscribe to the class Listserv/Listproc (discussion group). Group discussions using COW (Conferencing on the Web) require a separate logon name and password which will be distributed via e-mail. The Online Meetings are scheduled CHAT sessions (synchronous, real-time communication where everyone's words appear on the computer monitor). To use CHAT you will need to download the appropriate software for your computer. Refer to the UCCS Web page at http://www.csus.edu/uccs/chat/ to download the software.

Instructor

  • I encourage electronic communication and office visits. Refer to my home page for scheduled office hours.

"Virtual office hours" through electronic mail, the class discussion list, COW and CHAT sessions allow quick feedback. The discussion list serves as a forum for students to help each other by suggesting answers and engaging in online conversations.

    1. Obtain an e-mail account and Internet access.
    2. Learn e-mail, Internet and file management basics.
    3. Search for discussion lists in a related topic and join one or two.
    4. Join the Conference on Web (COW) by obtaining a separate logon name and password through the instructor.
    5. You will logon to COW and enter the class discussion.
    6. You can now respond to the topic posted by the instructor or to the conversation posted by other students.
    7. You can also initiate a conversation.
    8. Everyone in the group can view all the discussions conducted at any time by logging in.
  • Online Meetings

  • Just like you need a Web browser to use the World Wide Webe, you need an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client to log into a chat session.

Download the appropriate IRC client for your operating system and install it.

Read the file: How to join a chat session using mIRC.
