Catalog Description:

Analysis of relations among various racial and ethnic groups as they interact with racism, ethnocentrism and class in the United States.

Students are taught to use electronic resources for searching through literature and parcitipating in discussions on racial and ethnic relations .

Computer knowledge is desirable but not required.

 

Course Objectives

The overall goal of the course is to help students understand and appreciate racial and ethnic diversity in the United States. Additionally, this course aims at helping students resolve racial and ethnic conflicts in posive and constructive ways.

The secondary goal is to furnish students with competence in electronic communication and data gathering.

Intermediate steps in the achievement of these goals include:

  • Learning to search for research reports on the web (Webquest).
  • Conducting surveys through ListServ and Newsgroup.
  • Participating in debate via Conferencing and Chatting.
  • Exchanging opinions via E-mail.

Assignments and Exams

Exams: There will be three in-class term exams based on the text book:

  • Exam 1 (March 16 -- Chs.1,2,3,4,6)
  • Exam 2 (April 11 -- Chs.5,7,8,9,10,11)
  • Exam 3 (May 18 -- Chs. 12,13,14,15,16)

Web Quest: Choose one of the racial/ethnic groups and , using the World Wide Web, find information regarding the topics shown below:

  • Group identification
  • Stereotyping/racism
  • Political status and civil rights movements
  • Education
  • Economic status
  • Social issues

COW: Participate in Conference on Web by posting your opinions at least three times every week.
