  • Become oriented to the sociology of cyberspace.
  • Learn basic skills in accessing the Internet to obtain information and to communicate with others.
  • Reflect on the vast possibilities available in the virtual society and on their possible adverse side effects.

Group Activities

E-mail exchange

Send E-mail to the instructor, introducing yourself. Tell your racial/ethnic background.

Send E-mail to one another to find out who your classmates are.

 

 

Exercises

 

 

Webquest: Select a topic in the controversial areas of racial/ethnic relations

  • Examine both sides of arguments.
  • Reflect on your own position.

 First and second week

Discussion Groups

Refer back to the People section for information on communication tools and student e-mail addresses

 

 

Conference on Web (COW)

Each student is a moderator for a particular topic of choice.

  • Start a conversation for discussion.
  • Participate in discussion for the conversations initiated by others.
  • Summarize the discussion which you have moderated and post it on COW.

You will receive the COW account during the second or third week to enter COW.

Thereafter, attend the conference weekly and post your opinion at least three times a week.
