Summer Bridge Academy

June 24 to August 1, 2024

The Summer Bridge Academy is an intensive summer academic program designed to help incoming first-year students who are part of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) make a smooth transition from high school to college. In addition, provides you with pre-college course work, experiences that promote a timely graduation, and assist you throughout your enrollment at Sacramento State.

The Program

Summer Bridge Academy participation is MANDATORY for all EOP first-year students. The course offerings include English, Math, Statistics, or other GE courses (3 units) plus Leadership Development Course (1 unit). Course placement is based on Directed Self Placement (DSP), ALEKS PLL, and AP/IB scores.

EOP Welcome Day

Summer Bridge begins with a one-day, EOP Welcome Day where students will learn what to expect during the summer program, first year and beyond. The event is scheduled for Thursday, June 20, 2024.

New Student Orientation

The New Student Orientation office offers a mandatory one-day orientation session exclusively for EOP students at a reduced cost. The orientation is scheduled for Monday, July 8, 2024.

Attendee Information

Virtual Program

This year’s program is online and attendance is mandatory for all classes. You will need access to the internet and a computer to do your assignments, attend classes and workshops which will be offered through Canvas and Zoom.

Working During the Program

We highly recommend that students do not work during Summer Bridge since students will have an intense, full-time academic workload. If students work during the program, please plan accordingly to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Apply

To be considered for the program, students must apply to EOP and Sacramento State via Cal State Apply online at Cal State Apply from October 15, 2023– December 15, 2023.

Program Cost

Summer Bridge is FREE! However, you must be enrolled for the Fall 2024 semester for courses to be credited. Classes taken during Summer Bridge will be added to your fall schedule by the department and no action is required by the student. If you are enrolled in less than 12 units in the fall, then you are responsible for paying those additional fees. If student withdraws for the Fall 2024 semester classes cannot be posted or credited.

Admissions to the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)

Q: How will I benefit from the program?
EOP students benefit from the following services: admissions assistance, a special orientation to the university, academic advising, personal counseling, tutoring, financial aid advising, EOP grant award for eligible EOP students, course placement and planning, learning and study strategies, and leadership opportunities.

Q: What if I am an incoming EOP student and would like to attend Summer Bridge, but I have not been contacted by EOP?
If you are admitted as an EOP student, you will have to continue the process by completing the verification form, which allows you to accept, or decline to be part of EOP and once the verification form is completed, you will need to complete the Summer Bridge Packet. If by then you have not been contacted, please email eop-sb1@csus.edu.

Q: What if I complete the verification form and turn in my SB documents but decide not to attend Sac State?
You need to let us know by email at jmejia@csus.edu as soon as possible if you are not planning to attend Sac State.

Q: Will I be notified if I was accepted into EOP?
Yes, admitted students will be notified via email in March.

Q: If I were not admitted into EOP, would I be notified?
You will receive a letter in April notifying you were not admitted to EOP.

Q: Do I need to apply to EOP to attend Summer Bridge?
Yes. All admitted Summer Bridge students are part of EOP.

Q: Will someone help me plan my schedule for the Fall Semester?
Your schedule will be determined by Hornet Launch Program (structure scheduling). If you have questions about your major or need academic planning, schedule an appointment with an EOP Counselor through EAB. For more information about Hornet Launch Program.

Q: Will I have a counselor assigned to me? If so, how do I find out who is my counselor?
Students are more than welcome to see any counselor they would like.

Summer Bridge General Questions

Q: When are the SBA Questionnaire and Release of Liability due?
The packet needs to be submitted by May 1st.

Q: Who may participate in Summer Bridge?
SBA is mandatory for all incoming first-year students who are admitted to EOP.

Q: How long is Summer Bridge?
Summer Bridge is a six-week intensive academic program starting on June 25th and ending on August 1rd.

Q: What materials do I need to attend Summer Bridge?
You need access to the internet and a computer. We will lend out books to EOP students according to their course during SBA.

Q: Do I have to purchase books?
No, EOP will be lending you the books that are needed for your courses, which you must return on August 28th, 2024.

Q: When do I have to attend classes?
Classes and workshops meet in person on Monday through Thursdays from 9:00 am to 12 pm, please refer to your student calendar.

Q: Does SBA provide a lunch Stipend?
No, we do not provide lunch stipends.

Q: If I have a medical emergency, who should I inform?
If you are in a critical condition call 911 or contact your doctor. Inform the EOP Program staff.

Q: What if I need help with a class, will tutoring be offered?
Depending on the class you are taking, there will be tutors available.

Program Questions

Q: How many courses will I be taking?
Two, a General Education Course and a Leadership course.

Q: Where can I see my courses that I am taking during SBA?
Your courses will appear on your student calendar, which will be provided via email the week before Bridge Starts.

Q: Can I change my class schedule for Summer Bridge?
You can contact us to make accommodation according to your schedule with proof that you have credit for the course through AP/IB or community college courses.

Q: Class size?
Depending on the class but varies between 20-125 students.

Q: Can I miss any classes?
You are not allowed to miss any classes during Summer Bridge. If you must miss class due to an emergency, make sure to notify your instructor. One day of class is equivalent to THREE class sessions.

Q: I have a problem with my SBA schedule, who do I contact?
Contact the Summer Bridge Program at eop-sb1@csus.edu for any changes.

Q: Can I work while participating in the program?
We highly recommend that students do NOT work during Summer Bridge, since students will have an intense, full-time academic workload.

Q: If I have questions or if I need to see a counselor, where should I go?
Depending on the questions, students are welcome to call or email the EOP office. We encourage you to make an appointment on the EAB website.

Orientation

Q: I have been admitted to Summer Bridge and I am confused about registering for Orientation, what should I do?
Once admitted to the university, you will receive an email regarding registration for Orientation. Log on to My Sac State, click on Student Center, and at the bottom left click on “New Student Orientation” to register.

Q: When is the New Student Orientation for EOP students?
EOP Orientation will be TBA.

Assessment and Test Information

Q: I have been admitted to EOP. What will I take during Summer Bridge?
SBA offers the following courses: English, Math, or GE and a Leadership course. Students are placed in courses based on their DSP/ALEKS placement scores and AP, IB, and College Credit.

Q: What are the DSP and ALEKS?
DSP is a Direct Self-Placement test that places you in your English course based on the score you receive. Directed Self Placement (DSP)

The ALEKS PPL is a placement test for your math level. Based on your score, you will be placed in certain math courses. Please complete the DSP and ALEKS before SBA begins ALEKS PLL.

Q: Can I retake the DSP and ALEKS?
You can retake the ALEKS PPL. The DSP is only allowed to be taken once.

Course Credit

Q: Do I get credit for passing the course?
Yes, students who pass the courses offered during Summer Bridge will receive college credits. Student must be enrolled at Sacramento State in the Fall 2024 semester. If student withdraws for the Fall 2023 semester classes cannot be posted or credited.

Q: What happens if I do not pass the course I am taking?
If you do not pass the course, you will receive no credit.

Q: When do I get my grades?
You will be able to see your grades at the end of the Fall 2024 semester in your Student Center. Your instructors will let you know about your grades after Summer Bridge has ended.

Q: When will the courses I take during Bridge show in my student center?
The Summer Bridge courses will be posted to your My Sac State’s Fall 2024 schedule after Census Date. You do not need to enroll in the courses, we will do all the necessary procedures on your behalf. Do not drop your Summer Bridge courses when you see them in late October.

Q: When will my grades from Summer Bridge show on my transcript?
Summer Bridge grades will be posted to the transcript in January 2025.

Q: Are the Summer Bridge classes transferable?
It depends on when and where you are planning to transfer to another institution. Summer Bridge courses will be reflected in the Fall 2024 class schedule.

Cost and Financial Aid

Q: Will I be able to receive financial aid during the summer?
Financial Aid is not available during the summer for incoming students.

Q: How much does Summer Bridge cost?
Similar to a scholarship, the Summer Bridge Academy is a FREE six-week program! However, you must be enrolled in at least 12 units in the Fall 2024 semester for courses to post. EOP is not responsible for any fees if students are below 12 units. We also provide textbooks for students who are admitted to the program.

Q: What Courses will be offered in the Summer?
Students will take one General Education course and one ALS 79 Leadership Development Course. Courses offered include: Education 10 (EDUC 10), Child Development 30 (CHAD 30), Ethnic Studies 11 (ETHN 11), History 17B (HIST 17B), Theatre 1 (THEA 1), Statistics 1 (STAT 1), English 5 (ENG 5).
