Temporary Faculty Lecturer Information

Appointment Information

The California State University (CSU) system classifies all of the following as "Lecturers": part-time faculty, temporary faculty, lecturers, and adjunct faculty*. Sacramento State typically refers to all of the above as "part-time faculty" or "temp faculty" regardless of the time base the faculty member works. Any of the above terms are used to describe non-tenured/tenure-track faculty.

*At Sacramento State, the term "adjunct faculty" applies to volunteer faculty.

Your employment each semester is contingent upon both available funding and available work based on enrollment expectations. A determination of adequate enrollment will be made by the Department Chair and Dean. Should enrollments in the University, the Department or the course(s) assigned to you not meet campus expectations, you will be notified in accordance with the provisions of Article 12.5 of the Memorandum of Understanding for Unit 3 – Faculty.

All new faculty or faculty who have had a break in service for 12 months or more must undergo a background check.

Temporary faculty are broken up into four (4) different ranks/grades: Lecturer A, B, C, and D. The initial placement of these ranks/grades is dictated by a combination of academic preparation and work experience. The University Appointment, Retention, Tenure, and Promotion (UARTP) policy article 5.03.B defines the minimum requirements for the initial placement on the ranks/grades listed below. Initial placement generally falls into either Lecturer A or B depending on qualifications, department equity, etc.

  • Lecturer A (Grade 2): Master's degree in the discipline or equivalent educational experience; or Bachelor's degree plus the equivalent of at least five years teaching or relevant professional experience.
  • Lecturer B (Grade 3): Doctorate or equivalent educational experience; or Master's degree plus the equivalent of at least five years teaching or relevant professional experience.
  • Lecturer C (Grade 4): Doctorate or equivalent educational experience plus at least five years of teaching experience.
  • Lecturer D (Grade 5): Doctorate or equivalent educational experience plus at least ten years of teaching experience.

Advancement to a higher rank/grade normally follows the Temp Faculty Range Elevation process.

The salary ranges for the above ranks/grades can be found via the CSU Salary Schedule. Placement within the minimum and maximum of the salary range in a given rank is up to the discretion of the college and department. Most departments/colleges have base starting salaries with within each rank with some small variance based on the individual’s experience, qualifications, etc.

The salary ranges indicated are based on a "full-time rate" (15 weighted teaching units [WTUs]). A semester's worth of compensation is made up of six (6) payments of the given amount. To calculate your salary for a semester, the base rate would be pro-rated based on the units taught out of 15 WTUs.

For an example of faculty pay distribution, please visit the Payroll website.

If you were a Lecturer A assigned 3 units at the minimum salary ($5,007), your pay would be structured as follows:

$5,007 x 3/15 (3 units out of a possible 15 units total) = $1,001.40 x 6 checks = $6,008.40 total for 3 units/semester.

Temporary faculty appointments are either by semester or academic year. One class is typically 3 WTUs. The maximum faculty can work is 15 WTUs per semester. For information on how appointments affect future appointments, review our Entitlement page.

Temporary faculty who have previously retired from a CalPERS agency (known as Rehired Annuitants) are subject to certain restrictions during their appointment. See our Rehired Annuitants page for more information.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, duties will include those professional responsibilities normally assumed by temporary teaching faculty, including but not limited to, time for student office hours related to the class(es) being taught. Office hours are to be scheduled outside of class hours. Per the campus Office Hours policy, for faculty with less than full-time appointments, this policy has been interpreted as requiring 45 minutes of scheduled office hours each week for each three (3) units of instructional assignment, not to exceed three (3) hours per week.

Written or electronic student evaluations of teaching shall be required for all faculty unit employees who teach. Normally, all classes taught by each faculty unit employee shall have such student evaluations. Where there is an approved exception to the “all classes taught” rule, however, classes chosen for evaluation by students shall be representative of the faculty unit employee's teaching assignment.

Temporary faculty will be evaluated annually according to the current CBA. A copy of the current evaluation policy may be accessed at https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/faculty-staff/labor-and-employee-relations/Documents/unit3-cfa/article15.pdf.

The CSU offers eligible employees a comprehensive benefits package including health plans, retirement plans, tuition reduction, disability leave options, and other benefit programs.

Retirement:
Federal law requires that all employees be covered by a retirement program. The appropriate retirement program and social security eligibility are based on time base and length of appointment. Please notify the HR Payroll Office if you retired from CalPERS since your last appointment.

Healthcare:
Pursuant to the Unit 3-Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), part-time faculty appointed for at least one semester with a timebase of 40% (6 units) or more, are eligible to enroll in benefits within 60 days of a qualifying appointment. Upon enrollment, and within the established enrollment deadlines/timeframes, benefits are effective on a prospective basis.
