Why does IRT recommend certain technology?
IRT recommends technology that meets campus standards, is compatible with university systems, and can be supported by IRT. Standard configurations help simplify deployment, onboarding, maintenance, and equipment replacement while providing a consistent user experience. Although laptops paired with docking stations are the recommended solution for most employees, IRT can recommend alternative configurations based on business or technical needs. Learn more about Campus Device Standards.
Why are university-managed devices configured with campus security standards?
University-managed devices are configured to meet CSU and Sacramento State security requirements and help protect university information. Standard security settings, software, and management tools improve security, reliability, and supportability while enabling IRT to efficiently deploy, maintain, and support devices throughout their lifecycle. Learn more about the Workstation Security Standards.
Why should I contact IRT before purchasing technology?
IRT can help identify technology that meets campus standards, is compatible with university systems, and can be supported by IRT. We also provide recommendations, equipment specifications, vendor options, and quotes to help departments make informed purchasing decisions and maximize the value of their technology investments. Engaging IRT early helps ensure technology purchases align with business needs while allowing us to plan for deployment, configuration, and onboarding activities.
Why do technology purchases follow a procurement review process?
Many technology purchases require additional review to ensure they meet campus standards for compatibility, accessibility, information security, licensing, and long-term support. Working with IRT early helps identify any required reviews before equipment is purchased, reducing delays and helping departments make informed technology decisions. Learn more about the Technology Procurement Process.
What if I am not sure what technology is needed?
That's okay. IRT can help assess the employee's role, workspace, and business requirements and recommend appropriate technology solutions based on campus standards and support considerations.
What if my department does not currently have funding for equipment?
You can still contact IRT to discuss technology needs and planning considerations. We can help identify appropriate equipment and provide budgetary estimates to support future planning and funding discussions. Depending on the situation, IRT may also be able to discuss temporary or interim options while long-term equipment needs are being addressed.
Can I request a quote?
Yes. IRT can provide quotes for supported computers, devices, accessories, and peripherals. We can also identify preferred vendor options and available contract pricing, which may provide better value than purchasing independently.
Does IRT provide computer replacement or refreshes?
No. IRT does not maintain a campus-wide computer replacement/refresh program. While temporary funding sources have supported replacement initiatives in the past, departments, divisions, and colleges are responsible for funding technology purchases and refreshes. In some cases, divisions or colleges may establish their own funding programs or replacement schedules for their employees.
Will IRT purchase the equipment for me?
No. Departments are responsible for completing purchasing activities through established procurement processes. IRT provides recommendations and quotes but does not purchase equipment on behalf of departments.
