About Allied Health Sciences
About the Department
The Department of Allied Health Sciences is the primary pathway into healthcare careers at Sacramento State, serving one of the largest and fastest-growing student populations on campus. Home to the Bachelor of Science program in Health Science, the Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Health and Recreation, and a fully online Health Science Degree Completion Program, the department equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to improve health and well-being in diverse communities.
BS in Health Science
The Bachelor of Science in Health Science offers a rigorous, science-based education that prepares students for a wide range of careers in nursing and the allied health professions. Through a multidisciplinary curriculum integrating the biological, physical, social, environmental, and computational sciences, students develop a comprehensive understanding of the scientific and human dimensions of healthcare. Flexible elective options and built-in prerequisite courses allow students to tailor the program to meet their career goals, preparing them for immediate entry into the workforce or for graduate and professional programs in nursing, physician assistant school, occupational therapy, and other healthcare fields.
BS in Therapeutic Health and Recreation
The Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Health and Recreation prepares students for meaningful careers dedicated to improving health, well-being, and quality of life through therapeutic and recreational interventions. Through a strong foundation in health sciences, students develop expertise in assessment, documentation, leadership, and person-centered, evidence-based practice to support the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being of individuals. Graduates are equipped to pursue careers as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS), behavioral and mental health specialists, case managers, child life specialists, and professionals in counseling and community support services across a variety of healthcare settings (e.g., hospitals, rehabilitation centers, behavioral health programs, adaptive sports organizations, schools, community agencies, veterans' services).
BS in Health Science Degree Completion Program
The Bachelor of Science in Health Science degree completion program provides an alternative option for students who need a fully online modality, have already completed an associate's degree or most of their lower-division coursework, and are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare or are already working in healthcare and seeking career advancement.
