Sacramento State has been on the leading edge of sexual violence awareness and victim advocacy for years. In keeping with this commitment, the University offers a lineup of events and activities during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April, including Take Back the Night, Denim Day, the art installation “This is What it Feels Like,” a production of The Vagina Monologues, and bystander intervention workshops.

The month’s theme is “I believe and support survivors.” For more information on activities and events, call Student Health & Counseling Services at (916) 278-5422.

Let’s Talk SEXy – 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 2, American River Courtyard. Peer health educators from Student Health and Counseling Services will be on hand to answer questions about sexuality and reproductive health.

Coffee and Consent – 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, April 3, Library Quad. The Office for Equal Opportunity serves up free coffee and hot chocolate – and valuable information about affirmative consent. In 2014, California became the first state to enact “yes means yes” legislation, which requires “an affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity.” For more information on Sac State’s “We Care, We Will Help” campaign: csus.edu/titleix.

“This is What it Feels Like” – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, April 23, and Tuesday, April 24, Global Lounge in the University Library breezeway. The mission of this art installation – created by Sacramento State alumna Terra Lopez – is “to provide participants with the auditory experience of being on the receiving end of catcalling, in order to promote understanding and stop the misogynistic patterns that have become embedded in our culture.” For details: thisiswhatitfeelslikeproject.com.

Denim Day – 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, Library Quad. Hornets are encouraged to wear denim, as a part of a national campaign that draws attention to misconceptions surrounding sexual assault. Denim Day was created after the Italian Supreme Court in 1998 overturned a rape conviction and ruled that the survivor implied consent when she helped the perpetrator remove her tight jeans. Women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work the following day to show solidarity with the survivor. The court later overturned its “denim defense.”

17th annual Take Back the Night – 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, Library Quad. A march to the residence halls and back aims to raise awareness of sexual- and gender-based violence and encourage the campus community’s commitment to activism. – Dixie Reid
