Whole School Approach

The materials on this site have been created for any teachers, K-12 to assist them as they address bullying within their classrooms, and their schools. The materials are based on past research and best practices. Most of the resources located on this site are free to use. We simply ask that you give us credit for any material that is utilized.

The materials on this site are established to support a whole school approach response to bullying. The whole school approach is an evidence based approach that includes education and involvement of all stakeholders around bullying and sexual harassment prevention and intervention. Stakeholders include all staff, faculty and students, as well as parents and other community members. Only with everyone working together can lasting changes be made to transform the school cultural from one that supports bullying to one where all children feel safe.

The resources included throughout this website are intended to assist schools and teachers as they respond to bullying throughout their school. While the choices of how to respond and what programs to use are determined by the culture of the school. We offer key components to consider when addressing bullying at your school and in the classroom.

General Information, Resources and Tools

These are different ideas to use to help prevent bullying. One alone will not stop bullying altogether, as they should be used in conjunction with other programs, policy changes, etc. Just part of the Whole School Approach. We have created a reading list for teachers, identifying commonly used books is classrooms. We identify books that can be applied to all grades, as well as offer a brief statement about issues about bullying that arise in the book, to help lead the discussion. The mapping survey can be useful, especially if you also survey students and teachers (Olweus and Sullivan offer commonly used surveys). Here is an example mapping survey: Example The parent newsletters are suggestions. Edit them in a way that best reflects the changes/programs at your school.

The "Responding" section are general suggestions for each group to respond to bullying/harassment.

Video Resources

We have created, in conjunction with the California State University, Sacramento, Academic Technology and Technical Services, videos that address bullying. These videos are created to be used in the classroom. Also located on the website are items to assist teachers with leading classroom discussions surrounding the videos. Both guidelines, which include general information about bullying, as well as directions and ideas about leading the discussions. A powerpoint presentation has also been created to help with leading the discussion, including specific discussion for the students. Use and edit to best meet your needs. We just ask to be given some recognition if you present publicly (outside of your classroom).
