Courses That I Teach
All course information is on this page. Click on the link of the class you are interested in, and you will find the course syllabus, test study guides, and student PowerPoints. You should bring the PowerPoint for the day with you to class. You can print out a hard copy or view the PowerPoint on your device. Some note taking is expected during each class time, and thus class attendance is critical. If you miss a class, you are responsible for obtaining any missed information from a fellow student. Thanks! This course is taken in the junior year. The course involves a scientifically-based overview of typical language development in children, beginning in infancy and going through adolescence and adulthood. The class discusses variables that can impact language development (e.g., poverty, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and others). The class includes a review of theories of language acquisition, basic principles of language sampling, and elements of grammar. There is an introduction to basic principles of assessment and intervention for children with language impairments as a foundation to the child language disorders class offered the subsequent semester. Evidence-based practice is emphasized, and scientific research studies are utilized to support recommendations for assessment and intervention. The concepts of linguistic human rights, intersectionality, and equity vs. equality are incorporated into the course.
In-class lectures will be accompanied by PowerPoints. You may print out student PowerPoints from this website or bring them to class and take notes on your computer, iPad, or other device. Some note taking is definitely expected during class time. Thus, class attendance is strongly encouraged.

STUDY GUIDES
Description and Place of Course in Program:
The focus of this 3-unit graduate seminar is the advanced study of children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). In this seminar, we will discuss assessment and intervention for children and adolescents with DLD. We will discuss special populations such as bilingual children, children with sensory processing disorder, at-risk infants and toddlers, children with autism spectrum disorder, and others. The focus is on evidence-based practice—assessment and intervention strategies and techniques supported by scientific research. Because so many children with DLD have concomitant speech sound disorders, we will informally integrate speech activities into our discussions about language intervention. We will also have a targeted focus on connecting intervention with Common Core State Standards. Contemporary special topics presented by expert guest speakers will be integrated into course content. The concepts of linguistic human rights and social justice are incorporated into the course.
- 8/28 and 9/2/25 Review of Language Theories, Typical Development, and Relationship of DLD to Speech Sound Disorders
- 9/4/25 Assessment of Young Children: Language Sample Analysis
- 9/9 and 9/11/25 Approaches and Techniques for Early Intervention

STUDY GUIDES
This class involves the study of typical speech sound development in children. The class also involves discussion of etiologies and specific characteristics of articulatory-phonological disorders, also known as speech sound disorders. There are detailed descriptions and analyses of specific assessment and treatment materials and procedures. Use of case studies helps students integrate information taught in this class. There are hands-on class activities to give students practice in broad and narrow phonetic transcription of speech sound errors. Evidence-based practice is emphasized, with a direct focus on scientific research studies to support information taught in the course. The concepts of linguistic human rights, intersectionality, and diversity, equity, and inclusion are incorporated into the course. Spring only; 3 units.
It is important to bring each PowerPoint outline to class, as some notetaking is required. You may print out hard copies of each PowerPoint and take notes by hand, or you can take notes electronically on your laptop or other device. If you miss a class, you will be expected to get notes from other students. Class attendance is strongly encouraged so that you do not miss information.

Children's Book Drive Love Talk Read
Over one quarter of a million children's books have been collected and donated to at-risk children in poverty to build a brighter future!
We collect new and gently-used children's books to give to under-resourced children in California and developing countries such as the Russia, Philippines, Mexico, China, Ukraine, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Australia, South Africa, Micronesia (island of Kosrae) Samoa, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Ecuador. Statistics indicate that the average middle class child has 13 or more books in the home; in some under-resourced communities, there is one book for every 300 children. When building prison cells, states such as California and Virginia factor in the number of 3rd graders reading below grade level!
